Udaipur Solar Observatory

Udaipur Solar Observatory is one of the best Solar Observatories in Asia and one of the main tourist attractions in Udaipur.

Situated on an island in Fateh Sagar Lake, the observatory was built in 1976 by Dr Arvind Bhatnagar. Udaipur Solar Observatory was designed on the model of Solar Observatory at Big Bear Lake in Southern California.

The observatory has been strategically built on an island. Being surrounded by water the air turbulence, which occurs due to heating of the ground by sun’s rays, over and around the observatory is lesser and hence clearer and sharper images of the sun can be taken.

Besides being located in the desert state of Rajasthan, the area sees maximum number of cloudless days which are vital for acquiring accurate and quality images of sun.

Udaipur Solar Observatory houses a variety of high resolution telescopes and other modern and high quality apparatus.

Currently, the observatory is run by Physical Research Lab on behalf of the Department of space, Government of India.
